6 DOS, or Disk Operating System was the dominant operating system for IBM PC compatible machines in the 1980s and early to mid 1990s. Several companies created their own variant of DOS, with Microsoft's MS-DOS being the most popular, followed by IBM's PC DOS. FreeDOS is a current open source implementation of DOS that is still getting updated.
